Dr Sverre Løken graduated from Medical School, University of Oslo in 1988. He underwent specialty training at Akershus University Hospital, Norway, and Oslo University Hospital, Oslo, Norway. He is a specialist in general and orthopaedic surgery. He has been a consultant at the Sports Traumatology Unit, Orthopaedic Department, Oslo University Hospital since 2000. He is now the chair of this unit. He is practising knee sports traumatology, including cartilage repair, multi-ligament reconstructions, meniscal transplantations, and osteotomies around the knee as well as hip arthroscopies. His team is treating the majority of knee dislocations in Norway and is a referral center for complex knee ligament cases in the South East region of Norway. His team has a high publication rate in international, peer reviewed journals and new research projects related to knee, shoulder and hip surgery are ongoing.
Dr Løken has been a team doctor of the Norwegian national rowing team. He has a previous athletic career in rowing and won a world champion title in 1982 and a bronze medal at the 1984 Olympic Games. In 2010, he defended his PhD on “Cartilage injuries in the knee, natural history and surgical repair” supervised by Prof. Lars Engebretsen. He is part of the Oslo Sports Trauma Research Center since the founding in 2000. He is a board member of the Norwegian Arthroscopy Association. He is a member of ESSKA and ISAKOS and is member of the Hip Arthroscopy Committee of ESSKA. He has been a reviewer for the KSSTA journal since 2010.
He has published 22 scientific articles and one book chapter with most of the articles related to cartilage research and hip arthroscopy.
